What’s going on everybody! Today we are going to be talking about my story of starting in the gym and the importance of following a program. I see a lot of people walk into the gym and not have any idea of what they should be doing. I completely understand too! It’s intimidating especially when you are just starting out. I have been there. That is why I always recommend finding someone that knows what they are doing to show you the ropes! Here is my story on how I started my fitness journey!
When I first stepped into the gym I had no clue what I was doing. I was 13 years old and was just trying to lift so I could get a little bigger. I would go in and do all the cliche things people would do like bench all the time and hit curls as much as possible. However, I was not seeing any results whatsoever. I eventually got bored and really didn’t start taking lifting seriously again until I was about 16 years old.
I remember it like it was yesterday. My brother received a fitness book as a present. Written inside was a workout program that promised if we did it we would look like the chiseled guy on the cover. We obviously believed this because we were naive young lifters that wanted to believe it was that easy. We were sadly mistaken. The program inside the book was very cookie cutter and it did have some good things about it, but I personally didn’t see the results I was looking for.
At this point I was fascinated about fitness. I loved that the effort that I put in was rewarded with actual results that I could see. However, I was lacking an understanding on how programs were actually made. Since I was so new to lifting I was seeing results, but I knew there must be a better way. That was when my brother started doing research. We started doing everything we could do to see what worked and what didn’t. We did all things from CrossFit to powerlifting. We spent hours on Youtube studying the experts. We utilized everything that worked and threw away anything that didn’t.
All this work paid off. We ended up winning the first CrossFit competition that we ever signed up for. I was also able to pull a 1170lb total at a body weight of 165lbs. Everything was clicking, we were strong and endured. Ever since then we haven’t looked back. Training has become a part of our lives and everyday we look to get better. I ended up studying fitness even further and graduated with my Exercise Science degree. I now train clients that have also seen amazing results as well.
